My name is Jeryk Guillermo Coto, I was born in Costa Rica in 2004 and I moved to United States in 2018. I’m a Junior at New Jersey City University, pursuing a major in Computer Science. This field fascinates me because of its endless possibilities for innovation and problem solving. Outside of academics, I have a deep appreciation for sunsets, they’re a reminder of the beauty and tranquility in life. I also enjoy spending time with friends, as their company always brings joy and balance to my life. I also really like playing soccer. I've been playing soccer since I was 4 years old and it's always been my favorite sport. I played in my freshman and sophomore years in college, but in my junior year I decided to quit to focus more on my studies and my future, but I still really like playing it in my free time. My first language is Spanish and English is my second language and basically that's one of the reasons I enrolled in this class to further enhance my language skills. I believe that refining my English will open up more opportunities, both academically and professionally.
I remember the moment I first learned to read. My mother was the one who taught me from a very young age. The first time I read a book in its entirety was in seventh grade in Spanish class. The book was called "The Diary of Anne Frank." I remember that book perfectly. It had caught my attention and I liked it so much that I even got to see the movie about the story. My Spanish teacher was the one who inspired me to read a complete book for the first time. She was also the one who helped me improve my writing and also helped me read better and from that point in my life I feel that it was where I began to feel literate. Although I don't really like reading books, I've always liked writing stories or telling them more than reading them, and I also really love watching movies.
My grandfather was always my role model, he was an exceptionally intelligent man who not only supported me but also motivated me to pursue my goals. My mother also has been very important to me since she was the one who inspired me to go to university. She has always wanted the best for me and has always helped me improve as a person and she is my greatest inspiration. At this point in my life I feel like I still have a lot of literacy to learn. When I moved to the United States, I had to start over from scratch, which included learning a new language. This transition impacted my literacy journey, as adapting to English presented its own set of challenges. During high school, I was fortunate to have a teacher named Ms. Bowie who helped me a lot and thanks to her I learned English and she inspired me a lot to continue learning to read and write. I am currently still using literacy at university and I am the one who inspired myself to learn more literacy.
Jeryk,
ResponderEliminarThanks for sharing part of your story. The Diary of Anne Frank is a powerful book, especially since it was written by a young girl about your age when you read it. What a challenge to begin again in a new language just as you started hitting your stride academically in your first language. You are fortunate to have support from your family and from teachers, both in Costa Rica and in the U.S.
